Primary Ponies

What do you get when you mix geometric shapes with primary and secondary colors?  In first grade Art class at Kennerly, you end up with a beautiful carousel horse.  We drew horses with geometric shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, circle) and painted the bodies primary colors.  The next day, we mixed the primary colors to make secondary colors and painted the details.  Finally, we cut and glued, then added white oil pastels, yarn, and a googly eye to finish our creations.  Ready for a ride?

Enter If You Dare!

Would you be brave enough to enter our haunted castle sculptures?  In fifth grade Art class, we created a paper castle sculpture with tabs and slits.  Even though we all started with the same materials, we used our imaginations to make each castle unique.  Happy Halloween!

Not-So-Itsy-Bitsy Spiders

In second-grade Art class, we reviewed vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines, then used all of them to create spooky spider webs.  We added some color, but something was missing...a spider, of course!  We designed spider bodies and folded black strips in the accordion fold to make a paper sculpture spider that's literally springing off the page at you!

We always appreciate parent help in the Art room!  Whether it's cutting paper, pouring paint, helping students with a project, matting artwork, or working on bulletin boards, there is always a fun way to help out.  If you're interested, please check out the opportunities on volunteerspot.  If you would like to help on a day other than those listed, please email me at amikolajczak@lindberghschools.ws.  Thanks for supporting our Art program!

El Dia de los Muertos

If you see a skeleton dressed to the nines at Kennerly, don't be scared; it's just our fifth-grade artwork celebrating El Dia de los Muertos.  After we watched some short video clips to learn about the Mexican holiday, we drew sketches and final skeletons, focusing on drawing texture.  The finishing touch was a fancy frame with tissue paper flowers.

On the Menu for Art

Have you noticed Mr. Scribbles is dressed like a chef on our bulletin board outside the Art room?  The Art room monsters and I are cooking up lots of cool projects for our Kennerly artists!  If you would like to know what's next on the menu for your grade, please click on the link below, then double click on the document "Menu of Art Projects by Grade."  Bon appétit!

Symmetrical Alien Invasion

Watch out, Earthlings...our third-graders are unleashing a new crop of symmetrical aliens at Kennerly Elementary!  We began by discussing things that are symmetrical, or exactly the same on both sides, like hearts and butterflies.  Next, we folded our paper in half, drew aliens, and cut them out while the paper was folded.  Now, we are decorating them with paper collage eyes, clothes, horns, teeth, and anything else we can imagine.  Look for the finished artwork to come home soon!

Barbies Needed!

Do you have any well-loved Barbie- or Ken-type dolls that you are ready to "recycle"?  We are looking for about seventy doll volunteers to "mummify" with Plastercraft for a second-grade Ancient Egyptian project.  Dolls missing a limb and/or dolls with unfortunate haircuts are welcome, too.  Obviously, these will become the property of the second-grade artists and will not be returned.  Please send any donations to the Art room.  Thank you very much!

Kindergarten Art Authors

It's only August, but the Kennerly kindergarteners are already hard at work creating their Art Books.  Each kindergartener will create pages to show what he/she learned in Art throughout the school year.  Right now, we are working on the cover, which has a title, author's name, and pictures.  We will also create a first self-portrait for comparison, as well as pages about lines, shapes, primary colors, secondary colors, rhythm, and an about the author page, which will have a final self-portrait.  Check out these photos of our covers--we are off to a great start!

Time to start...making ART!

Welcome back to the Art room!  After a great summer, we are back in our studio, learning about and creating awesome Art.  If you would like to know more about the projects in store for each grade, please go to my schoolwires website and click on "Art Room Documents."

Speaking of back to school, here are some photos of our second-graders working on their first Art project of this school year.  They wrote their names with permanent markers, "hid" the names with doodles and patterns, added color with crayons, and finished with watercolors.  You can see some of our finished works of Art in the bookshelf by the office in the Kennerly lobby.

Welcome, Miss Wong!

We have a new friend in the Art room!  Please welcome Miss Wong, our new student teacher.  She attends Southeast Missouri State and she will be joining us at Kennerly until October 15.  We're happy she's here!

Kennerly's First Day of Fine Arts!

Thanks for celebrating our first annual Day of Fine Arts with us at Kennerly on April 26, 2012!  Visitors were treated to musical performances by each grade level, as well as a whole-school Art display in our grand hallway and Art room.  We had tons of visitors to the Art exhibition!!  Thanks for visiting our show, and congratulations to all of our student artists!

African-Inspired Masks in Third Grade Art

In third grade Art class, we created 3-dimensional masks inspired by African masks.  First, we looked at a powerpoint of photos of African masks and discussed their uses and how they look.  We paid special attention to the geometric shapes, since third grade is studying that in math.  Next, we drew our own masks on tagboard, cut them out, added decorations with markers, construction paper, and raffia, making sure to include at least three different geometric shapes.

Dress Like Mrs. Mikolajczak?

What does Mrs. Mikolajczak look like?  If you visited Kennerly on "Dress Like a Teacher Day," you would have seen at least four great examples of what she wears, including her name tag and (most importantly!) a pencil behind her ear or stuck in her ponytail.  You always have to be prepared when you're an Art teacher!
